The new 4S Ranch Branch is scheduled to open August 26th, the same day as the first day of school. The branch will be in the brand new 4S Ranch community at 16118 4S Ranch Parkway, San Diego, CA 92127 in the Rancho Bernardo/Penasquitos area.

The Club will offer activities such as: Arts and Crafts, Computers, Cooking, Dance Classes, Games Room, Special Events, Sports and much more.

You Go Girls! Track Meet

The 7th Annual "You Go, Girl" Girls' Track Meet took place on Wednesday, April 7th, hosted by the Linda Vista Branch. A total of 31 girls between the ages of 6-17 participated in the meet, which was held at nearby Kelly Park with sweeping canyon and bay views.

Each girl competed in four events: the 50 meter dash, the broad jump, the discus throw, and the 200 meter race. After the events the girls returned to the Boys & Girls Club for the Medal Ceremony, and were awarded with gold, silver, and bronze medals.

The "You Go, Girl" Track Meet was initiated seven years ago in response to a need for more attention to girls' sports within the organization. Some of the girls in this year's event have participated in previous years, and report that they look forward to the meet with special interest because it is something just for girls.

According to Tiyuana, age 9, "it was exciting because we went to the park without boys. Boys bring trouble."

Indoor soccer arena opens at Baker Branch

Taking part in the dedication of the new soccer arena at the Baker Branch were County Board Member Edna Sahm, Supervisor Pam Slater and Escondido City Council Member Marie Waldron. Behind them are Boys & Girls Club Board Members.

On November 12, members of our Baker Branch scored a new soccer arena thanks to a $25,000 county donation facilitated through Supervisor Pam Slater. Significant funds were also donated by Tom and Mary Tomlinson, who share in the naming of the arena: the Slater-Tomlinson Soccer Arena. The arena will be used by Club members and other community organizations for indoor soccer games.

Poway grand opening

The $3-million Sulpizio Family Branch, named after local philanthropists Gaby and Richard Sulpizio, will accommodate more than 1,000 members, and other community organizations will be able to use the sports facilities for league activities.

The completed Club is equipped with a full-size gymnasium, sports courts, playground, childcare center, nutrition center and technology center. These facilities provide important fitness and education programs for youth ages six to 18 during after school hours and for day camps.

The highlight of the Sulpizio Family Branch Dedication event was the purchase of a $30,000 van for the club's transportation program. Attendees at the event made donations throughout the night. Although the generosity of the crowd amounted to almost $11,000, the agency was still short of its $30,000 goal--until the Sulpizio Family generously decided to donate the difference to allow the van to be purchased!

A big THANKS to the following donors who helped purchase the new van:
Gaby & Rich Sulpizio, Ron Sipiora, Tom Pancheri, Sharon Payne, Shelly Anguiano, Jerry Fazio, Larry Michel, Steve & Liz Gutschow, Joseph & Kethleen Scuito, Kevin Paulson, Susan Shea, Tom & Debbie Preece, Poway Senior Center, Harvey & Sheryl White, Karla Palter/Olhausen, Tom & Teresa Bernard, Jim & Donna Bowersox, Bob Sowa/Pump It Up, Gary Molino, Chris & Brenda Coseo, Steve & Lisa Altman, Delvecchio's, Steve & Gina Storr, Ron Warner, and Jim & Paula St. John.

Taco Bell helps develop youth leaders

One of the core programs emphasized at the Boys & Girls Clubs is leadership skills. Each year, members from branches countywide are selected to attend a camp completely dedicated to the cultivation of these skills. The lucky members who are chosen are those who have demonstrated strength as a leader within the Club and their peer groups. Taco Bell helped sponsor this countywide camp by running the "Send a Kid to Camp" promotion at Taco Bell restaurants throughout the county. Taco Bell customers could help "send a kid to camp" by purchasing a bell for a dollar or more. All proceeds benefited the Boys & Girls Club's Leadership Camp.

Recently, the selected youth participated in a weekend camp in Idyllwild, where they attended workshops and seminars that focused on developing their leadership skills and teaching them to be independent thinkers, strong enough withstand the stresses of peer pressure.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego County thanks Taco Bell for raising more than $20,000 for last year's leadership camp. We look forward to another great camp this year.

Board Profile: Tom Hazard

Tom Hazard has worn a lot of "hats" at the Boys & Girls Club: donor, trustee, Board member, honoree and employee.

In 1970, his father, Bruce, received the Golden Achievement Award. Tom worked for the family business, R.E. Hazard Contracting, for 20 years and encouraged the company to support the Club. In 1975, Tom became a trustee of the William J. Oakes Branch and, in 1980, was elected to the San Diego Club's Board of Directors.

As a Board member, Tom chaired many committees including Budget & Finance, Capital Campaign and Golden Achievement Award Dinner. He was also a member the Financial Development, Property Management and several fundraising commit-tees. Tom received the Golden Achievement Award in 1991 and was appointed president and chief executive officer in 1996. He guided the organization through 2001. In January 2002, Boys & Girls Clubs of San Diego merged with Boys & Girls Clubs United to form the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego.

After the merger, Tom became a member of the Metro Board of Directors. In that capacity he has chaired the Metro Golf Tournament Committee and hosted the Hazard Poker Tournament with all proceeds benefiting the Club. In 2003, he won the Metro Region Sparkplug Award for his outstanding leadership.

In retirement, Tom continues to set an example for others to emulate with his generous contributions of his time, talent and treasure.
