Mission Moments
A "Mission Moment” is the personal story of what happens when a person has their life changed by attending the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego or a person discovers the reason they are or want to be a part of the BGCGSD Mission of helping over 25,000 kids!
ACADEMIC SUCCESS MISSION MOMENT
One program can change everything. Gabriel* was a shy second grader who was reluctant to participate in Club activities. Staff rarely heard more than three words out of him. Then the "Train like an Astronaut” program caught his attention. The program included exercises and lessons that kids would need to know if they were to become an astronaut. Members were put into an imaginary setting (i.e. being in space or aboard a space station) and asked to play/act out hypothetical situations. Gabriel became completely engaged in the program, trying out every exercise and eagerly raising his hand to answer every question. He participated more in those four sessions than he had in the past year. The program helped him break through his shyness and now he is engaged in a variety of programs.
